Five Six Zero

Every homicide, suicide, and traffic fatality has a distinct smell to it. The unfound and decomposing body, the iron scented blood and gunpowder, or the mixture of blood, transmission fluid, and radiator coolant. Every unnatural death is unique, and one gets hardened to that. An officer walks through the crime or accident scene, emotionally unattached, with a notepad, writing down clues and at the same time using all his or her senses to pick up more. "Smell that cordite or that electrical wire?" Little things are the start of a big case. But these young officers--me among them--file these scenes and smells away. There is a little file box like your mom had for recipes, in your mind. It is easy to close when it is new, but with much use, it will not stay closed. These memories, they do come back, and as bad as we try alone, we cannot stop the memories in later life. To those of you who walk the path without any regrets or bad memories, I salute you, truly admire you. I unfortunately am a weaker species. Things creep out of that box in my mind in the middle of the night. Getting my ass beaten and embarrassed, rapes, suicides, and only God knows how many traffic fatalities. Brothers and sisters, if you do not have this affliction, I applaud you! Keep your mental health. Help those in the line who struggle. I bow to you all.

Tell the Truth

John Corfinio wants to believe in the truth, justice, and fair play that is the very cornerstone of the court system, but his heartbreaking journey is littered with frustration and periods of incarceration in his continuous struggle for the right to establish a relationship with his only child. In spite of his best efforts to follow court-mandated procedures and rulings, he finds that the demands are not equally applied to both parents and that the leanings employed by the system are definitively lopsided in favor of his ex-wife. Every attempt to act in accordance with the demands of the court is met with repeated refusals until Corfinio finally reaches his breaking point and holds an entire courtroom hostage. He forces everyone to admit well-covered and long-buried truths about the faults of the system and the manipulations of those involved, which led to this critical impasse. In his doomed quest, he sadly discovers that it's not the truth that matters but, rather, who can manipulate the truth to their advantage that will win the day. Finding both unlikely allies and dangerous adversaries, the clock is ticking fast as he races toward a devastating truth that is correct and corrupt.

Corrections and Beyond

When Ivan Godfrey began his career as a corrections officer in the New York State Corrections System, it was still reeling from the brutal retaliation to the prison riots at Attica. As a young African American, he grew up in the Bronx, then he worked in prisons, such as the notorious Sing-Sing Prison. In fact, Ivan often met inmates he knew on the streets from his New York City neighborhood. His memoir is a wonderful testament to his determination to strive for a better life and take care of his growing family while working in some of the most dangerous prisons in America. It is also a one-of-a-kind window into the life of a young Black prison guard as he struggled to climb the ladder of success despite inherent and overt racial barriers. Now he is an assistant professor, teaching criminal justice and behavioral science at SUNY Ulster CC, forensic mental health at Russell Sage College, and forensic social work and the criminal justice system at the University at Albany School of Social Welfare. Dr. Ivan Godfrey's memoir is an inspiring journey from the streets of the Bronx to the daily psychological and physical violence while working for over twenty years in the NY State Correction System and finally to the halls of academia.

The Wrong Dominion

The SAA, Spy Agency Association, has now reached five hundred completed missions. The SAA is responsible for the well-being of the entire world, taking care of problems that citizens may not even be aware of. If you were aware of the problem, they would be doing their job wrong. The SAA is comprised of three different agencies: the SF, Secret Facility; the AF, Anonymous Facility; and the UNF, UnNamed Facility. Each of these agencies has recruited young people who are smart, strong, and capable of doing whatever is asked of them. Two agents in particular, Summer of the UNF and Jason of the SF, have been the best of their class, completing more missions than anyone else from any of the agencies; much to the dismay of Nathan who has been behind a handful of the plots foiled. When receiving the newspaper boasting of the five hundred completed missions, Nathan is more discouraged and determined than ever. When his daughter helps him realize that he has met Summer and Jason before, he is reminded of a specific quirk that the two of them have. If all goes to plan, this can be used against them, causing them to fight and allowing an opening for Nathan's plan to be implemented. Will Jason and Summer working against each other cause their agencies to fail, or will bringing them together be the worst idea Nathan has ever had?
